What moves the number on a pool deck is almost always the condition of the concrete underneath. Spalling — where the surface flakes and pits from years of water and sun — has to be repaired before anything is coated. Will It Be Slippery? And Does It Get Hot?
These are the two questions every pool owner asks, and both have real answers.
Traction. The flake system has natural texture built into the surface, and we add a non-slip additive to the topcoat on every pool deck. Quartz aggregate goes further — it’s the most textured finish we install and it’s a common choice for decks where kids run. We never install metallic finishes around a pool. Metallic is a smooth interior finish, and smooth plus wet plus barefoot is a combination we won’t put anyone in.
Heat. Colour choice does most of the work here. Lighter flake blends reflect noticeably more sun than dark ones and stay more comfortable underfoot in July. Javier brings samples so you can see them in your own light and choose accordingly — it’s a decision worth taking seriously on a surface people cross barefoot at two in the afternoon.
What’s Actually Involved
Repair first. Pool decks rarely start clean. Spalled areas get cut back and rebuilt, cracks get filled, and any existing coating is ground off completely. A coating applied over failing concrete fails with it, so this is where most of the work goes on an older deck.
Profile the surface. Diamond grinding opens the concrete so the coating bonds mechanically into it rather than sitting on top. Then everything is vacuumed clean before a drop goes down.
Colour and texture. Flake broadcast into the wet base coat, or quartz aggregate where you want maximum grip. Once cured, the surface is scraped back and vacuumed so it’s comfortable on bare feet rather than abrasive.
UV-stable topcoat. A polyaspartic clear coat seals it all in. This is the layer that keeps a deck from yellowing or chalking under Treasure Coast sun, and that resists chlorine, salt system residue and sunscreen.
